A Little background about my new release, Burning Bright:
Initially I wrote the song after working with my husband at his office one afternoon. I was inspired by a moment when a glint of light bounced off of his wedding band from across the room. I was feeling introspective and in my head wondering about what promises and wedding rings mean after 26 years of being married.
In August 2023, I went to a songwriting camp in Nashville with Rodney Crowell and friends. As a result, I had the opportunity to workshop this song with music producer Peter Asher and singer/songwriter Mary Beth Chapman.
The original version of the song was called, Band Of Gold.
Some of the feedback I received from Peter Asher: Purity of your voice is beautiful. Melodically - the melodic jump going back and forth to the 5th happens too many times in your verse - just do once. It’s ear catching. Effective once at the top of the verse, but then go in a different way for rest of the melody - it’s an ear worm. There’s already a hit song called Band of Gold. What other name could you choose.
Some of the feedback I received from Mary Beth Chapman: Beautiful natural vibrato in your voice. The lyric & melody are at odds - “eyes settle” doesn’t work. Say “wedding ring” instead of ring. Songwriter vagueness doesn’t work here - needing to connect the thoughts with details. She liked the chorus - but don’t use the word “bright” in both the verse and chorus - try to only use words once. Story is beautiful. But highlighting finger gives the wrong focus - focus is supposed to be on the ring - wedding band. You never say “band of gold” in the song, so why make it the title of your song?
I went home and reworked the song into Burning Bright. However, there were still some areas of the lyric & melody that required more time and polishing.
In September 2024, I started working with Halifax based producer Darryl Cameron (Blue Acres Music Production) to record a single of Burning Bright remotely from my home in Northern Ontario. Lots of great conversations and rough track versions were created. In the end, I’m especially grateful we were able to include a beautiful cello part in the recording.
With Burning Bright, my intention was to explore the idea of a mature love that is questioned by one of the partners but in the end endures to survive at the end of the day. I am very excited to bring you this final version of the song. I have found that expressing myself through songwriting is both rewarding and always a challenge. I hope this story will connect with listeners.
